1389891 Diapers JOHNSON & JOHNSON 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46233/72 Heading A5R A diaper comprises a facing web 16 of water-wettable bonded fibres, a water repellent fibrous backing layer 12 and between them a loosely compacted porous batt 14 having at least one compacted paper-like layer 14c at a mid portion with respect to its thickness. The batt 14 comprises short cellulose fibres (e.g. wood pulp) or cotton linters and the compacted layer 14c is formed by the application of moisture and pressure to the surface of one or more batt portions. The facing web 16 and the backing 12 are made from at least 75% 'short' (i.e. less than “" long) cellulosic fibres, the remaining fibres being 'long' (i.e. 1/2" to 21/2" long) fibres e.g. rayon fibres. The fibres are treated with a water repellent bonding agent, e.g. an acrylic emulsion, the fibres of the facing layer 16 being subsequently treated with a wetting agent, e.g. an ionic sulphonated alkyl ester. The batt is narrower than the facing and backing layers 12, 16 which are co-extensive. Preferably the backing and facing layers 12, 16 are made by a split web technique so that their loft sides are interlocked with one another and the batt in their facing areas. |
