1360390 Polymerization IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 5097/71 Heading C3P Olefinic compounds selected from styrene,α-methyl styrene, conjugated diolefins, C 5 steam cracked naphtha streams and coumarone/ indene mixtures are polymerized with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst comprising an inorganic halide, a hydrogen halide, and a substituted benzene which is liquid at the reaction temperature and which has at least one secondary or tertiary alkyl or cycloalkyl substituent. The substituted benzene may be cumene, t-butyl benzene, p-cymene, p-isobutyl toluene or pethyl t-amyl benzene. Preferably a complex of metal halide, hydrogen halide and substituted benzene is used. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of solvents and diluents, e.g. aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The olefinic compound may be butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, styrene,α-methyl styrene, coumarone/indene mixture or C 5 steam cracked naphtha stream containing cyclopentadiene, isoprene, piperylene, cyclopentene, pentene-1 and methylbutenes. Examples describe the polymerization of (1) C 5 steam cracked naphtha distillates, (2 and 3)α-methylstyrene, (4)α-methylstyrene and isobutylene, (5) isobutylene, (6)α-methylstyrene and dicyclopentadiene and (7) C 9 fraction of petroleum feedstocks with a catalyst complex formed from aluminium chloride, cumene and hydrogen chloride; and of (8) C 5 steam cracked naphtha distillates and diisobutylene with a catalyst complex formed from aluminium chloride, p-cymene and hydrogen chloride. |
