1528477 Diamond radiation detectors DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION (PTY) Ltd 18 Nov 1975 [4 Dec 1974] 47567/75 Heading H1K A detector of ionizing radiation (e.g. light, α, #, γ or X-rays) comprises a body or body part of type IIb semi-conducting diamond which has been subjected to high energy radiation (e.g. electrons) to induce atomic displacements. The effect of such treatment is to render the diamond non-conductive between electrodes 16 applied thereto, but in the presence of ionizing radiation the diamond once again carries a current when a direct voltage is applied between the electrodes. As shown only a band 14 of the diamond has been subjected to the high energy radiation, the remaining parts 10, 12 having been shielded, e.g. by lead, so as to retain their semi-conductive properties. |
