A space heating and generating unit (1) consists of a diesel or petrol engine directly coupled to an alternator. The engine is cooled by air drawn over it by a fan mounted on the front of the engine. The air is discharged through a duct (2) placed in the upper part of the unit running above the alternator. The exhaust of the engine is taken through a plate type heat exchanger (4) placed in the duct so that the heat in the exhaust is given up to the air. Beyond the heat exchanger is an electric heating resistance (5) which can be supplied from the alternator through a control switch (6). The air discharges through louvres (7) at the end of the duct of heat the surrounding spaces.
