A loom has a yarn clamp and cutter for the weft yarn to cut off the correct length for picking, the clamp comprising two clamp plates which move relatively in a direction parallel to their clamping faces to a first position in which the weft yarn is held by friction between the two plates for cutting and a second position in which the weft yarn is released. The force with which the weft yarn is clamped is minimized, thereby reducing the damage to the yarn and the possibility of yarn breakage. Pref. one of the plates is fixed and the other plate is moveable and pref. the plates are inclined so that a part of one plate is always in contact with a part of the other plate. Pref. the moveable plate is spring biassed towards the fixed plate and pref. the biassing force exerted by the spring is adjustable by a screw.
|
