An organic culture medium (32), for example peat, is placed into stagnant water (48), and a substantial part of its surface is exposed to humid air so that seeds or plant roots (56) are supplied with air. The culture medium (32) is located in a pot (20) whose lateral walls are porous or provided with vent holes (54). The pot (20) is arranged in a container, a ventilation chamber (52) being formed between pot and container which provides the culture medium (32) with humid air. Alternatively, the culture medium (32) can be arranged at a distance from the container wall which is provided with vent holes, so as to form the ventilation chamber (52). In this manner, the culture medium (32) is supplied continuously with air (54) and water (48), and plant roots (56) can grow from the culture medium (32) into the adjacent ventilation chamber (52). The plants (50) thrive under these growth conditions because overwatering is avoided and the plant roots can grow. <IMAGE>
