A television camera includes a pickup tube (1) with an electron beam generation system (5) and a target electrode (2). The target electrode consists of a photosensitive layer (4) and a signal electrode in the form of a series of isolated, electrically conducting stripes which are connected to parallel switching circuits (9) controlled by a signal generator (10). Before the line scan takes place, the signal electrode stripes are connected to a source of operating voltage. Scanning is then carried out in known fashion. Alternate signal electrode switching circuits (9) are interconnected in at least two groups (16, 17) which are connected to a changeover switch (13) so that successive switching can take place.
