The grinding or polishing tool for flat surfaces is driven with a fast to and fro movement of small amplitude. The grinding/polishing wheel mounting is moved across the surface at a speed which is reversed when the tool reaches the edge of the workpiece. The tool mounting is moved in cycles across the surface to be finished following two speed vectors which are at different orientations. Both vectors are at an angle to the to and fro movement of the tool. A first motor moves the tool or the work carrier in a first direction and a second motor carries out the same movement in a second direction. An arrangement alternatively reverses the drive direction of the two motors when the edge (2) of the surface (1) is reached.
