Pyrolysis oil from scrap rubber is sepd. into specific fractions, which are used for various purposes. Those boiling at >200 degrees C. are added to bituminous materials and may be used to swell or dissolve certain plastics before mixing with the bitumen. Fractions boiling at 200 degrees C. can be used to dissolve plastics or esp. rubbers to give solns. which can be vulcanised after addn. of sulphur or other suitable materials. Processing of the bituminous materials for roofing and sealing sheets, sound and heat insulating sheet, etc. is improved. Plastics can be incorporated into bitumen grades not previously suitable. Aromatic hydrocarbons can be extracted from the lower-boiling fraction, and it can be used like coal tar as a raw material for resins. In mixts. with bitumen, the high-boiling fraction reduces break pt. and hardness, increases elasticity, extensibility, ductility and adhesion, increases solubility of plastics, and shortens stirring times.
|
