[Class 78 (i)] [See also Group II] Coal and like fragmentary material to be separated into classes is fed on to a conveyer which is so moved in association with vertical plates between which the material passes that the particles are marshalled in rows on the conveyer. The particles may then be spaced out on a further conveyer before being treated for separation. In the apparatus shown, the material passes from a reciprocating feeder 1 terminating in a number of shoots 5 to a belt 6 intermittently advanced by adjustable gearing including a reciprocating rod 8 and wedgeshaped pawls 10 engaging grooves 11 in a wheel 12 on the shaft of the roller 14. On this belt the particles pass between pairs of vertical plates 16, 17 suspended from crossmembers 18, 19 reciprocated transversely in a curved path by connection as shown to opposite ends of bell-crank levers 20, 21, the effect on the particles being to separate them into single rows. The plates 16, 17 are preferably faced with resilient material. The rows of particles pass between walls 31 and down a shoot 32 to a belt 33 which is continuously moving at a greater speed than the mean speed of the belt 6 so that the particles are spaced apart. In some cases the reciprocating feeder 1 may be dispensed with and the material be otherwise fed to the marshalling device 16, 18. |
