Alkyl ester of N-(diphenyl phospjhonomethyl) glycine which is N-phosphonomethyl glycine or its intermediate, was prepd. by reaction of tre-phenyl phosphorous acid, glycine alkyl ester, and paraformaldehyde. The title compd. was useful as effective component of herbicide. Thus, 0.1 mole (PhO)3P was heated with 0.1 mole H2NCH2CO2Et. HCl and 3.0g para-formaldehyde at 100OC for 2hr, and it was also treated with 500ml N NaOH, and extd. with Et2O.
