PURPOSE:In the production of formaldehyde from methanol, a metal net is laid in the middle position of the catalyst layer to prevent the increase of pressure drop in the catalyst layer, keep the high yield and simplify the operation of exchanging the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:In the production of formaldehyde by contacting methanol with a catalyst of silver particles, a metal net is laid in the middle of the catalyst layer. The metal net is made preferably of at least one selected from copper, silver, platinum and alloys containing them and that of stainless steel also may be employed. The fineness of the net is required not to pass the particles of silver catalyst. the structure of the catalyst layer may be the monolayered bed with uniform particle size; however, prferably multilayered bed, especially the fine particles of silver is desired to be packed on the metal net. EFFECT:The catalyst structure permits the operation for long periods of time, requires no reduction of feed rate and minimize the amount of fine particles of silver used at the top layers. |
