A pump having unloading means associated therewith repetitively unloading same. The pump may be of the rotary positive displacement type with the unloading means taking the form of circumferentially extending pressure relief recesses (120) located along an edge of the rotor cylindrical portion (103) intermediate lobes (113 and 114). Communication between the pump inlet (101) and outlet (102) occurs repetitively producing a pulsating output. In use of the pump in a drive transmission system transmitting power from a prime mover to a load, a flywheel driven by the prime mover drives the pump which in turn drives an hydraulic motor. The unloading means repetitively unloads the pump allowing the prime mover to accelerate the flywheel, compensation means being provided to drive the hydraulic motor while the pump is unloaded. Other kinds of pumps provided with means internal or external thereto for repetitively unloading same, are also disclosed. |
