When preparing trifluoroacetyl compounds, in particular trifluoroacetyl chloride, by reacting 1,1,1-trifluoro- 2,2,2-trichloroethane with sulphur trioxide in the presence of mercury salts, good yields in association with short reaction times are obtained when a boron halide and/or a halogenosulphonic acid is additionally added.
