A shelf unit (1) for self-service purposes or for displaying audio cassettes, paperback books, "talking books (2)" or the like has shelves (3) which slope down from the front towards the rear and merge at their rear edge into an obliquely rising rear wall (4). The side parts (5) of the shelf unit are expediently connected to one another by the shelves (3) or the rear walls (4) and their attachments (8; 9). In this case, shelves (3) are provided which are each accessible at the same height from two sides, whose rear walls (4) are disposed obliquely and nearer to one another at their upper edge (6) than in the region of the shelves (3), and are integrally connected in the region of the upper edge (6). All the parts of the shelf unit (1) expediently consist of transparent material, in particular of acrylic glass. The accessibility from two sides and the integral construction of the shelves (3) and rear walls (4) allowing the latter results in a large storage capacity in a very small space, simultaneously having sufficiently rigid shelves. <IMAGE>
