The invention relates to a photoconductive strip detector consisting of a strip of photoconductive material having two bias contacts and a sensing region situated in between. To improve the detector resolution, the strip is designed in such a way that, when a bias voltage is applied, the bias voltage field has a modified field distribution over the strip length and brings about an appreciable reduction in the nonuniformity of the photocarrier drift velocity over the strip length. This can be achieved by varying the strip width or strip thickness over the strip length, varying the donor concentration in the basic material of the strip over the strip length, by differently treating the surface of the strip material over the strip length, or by using additional electrodes on either side of an exposed section of the length of the strip.
