A powder for magnetic recording materials, for example audio, video or many data-storage tapes, comprises 68-73% Mn, 26-30% Al, and 0-3% C+B+P+Si, having a specific surface area of at least 0.25m<2>g, preferably 1.0 m<2>/g, and having a low shape-anisotropy, preferably an aspect ratio not exceeding 4:1. The material has a high coercivity of 50-160 kA/m, preferably 65-95 kA/m, a high storage-density, is economical to produce, and is non- corrosible. Up to 2.5% weight of Ni, Fe, V, W and/or Zr may be present. |
