The method comprises introducing a carbon carrier and a gasifying agent as reagents, into a reactor comprising a bath of molten metal and/or slag, the reagents being brought into contact with the bath in a gas jet or in a particle jet in such a manner that the level of the bath rises from a lower level in the state of rest before the gasification process, through an increase in volume, to an upper level of the bath during the gasification process, at least one of the reagents being introduced at a height between the said upper and the said lower level of the bath. The invention also provides a reactor suitable for carrying out this method.
