PURPOSE:To improve corrosion resistance, by passivating the ground part of a stainless steel which is broken of a passivation film during ion plating of titanium nitride or titanium carbonitride and is exposed to the atmosphere by glow discharge of oxygen. CONSTITUTION:A vacuum vessel 1 is held in vacuum and a small amt. of gaseous nitrogen is introduced therein, then titanium is evaporated from an evaporating source 4 of an electron gun. Titanium nitride or titanium carbonitride is formed on the surface of an object 7 to be treated consisting of a stainless steel as a blank material. The passivation film consisting essentially of chromium oxide existing on the surface of the stainless steel is broken by such ion plating. Thereupon, gaseous oxygen is introduced into the vessel 1 after the ion plating to generate glow discharge whereby the ground part of the stainless steel exposed to the atmosphere is passivated. |
