Process for applying a glaze to a silicon carbide article

Silicon-impregnated silicon carbide articles are treated with a selective solvent, an about 50 to 100 mu m thick layer of the metal being dissolved out of the article. The porous surface layer is impregnated with the solution of a salt and a glaze, covering the surface of the article and consisting of a glassy silicate, is produced by heating in an oxidising atmosphere. The glaze protects the impregnated article in contact with silicide-forming metals, alkaline solutions and vapours.
