If a large number of terminals which are fed via a power supply device are connected to a digital subscriber interface at the subscriber end, the data transmission and the power feeding occurring via a multi-wire data line and additional power feeding being available from the switching system via the subscriber line which is only sufficient for supplying a few terminals, a corresponding message is sent from the subscriber-end subscriber interface via the data line to the terminals when the energy (for example mains) feeding the power supply device is missing, whereupon the terminals signal emergency operation to the switching system. The terminals are correspondingly identified in the switching system. Due to the different operating classes allocated to the individual terminals, restricted operation with different operating states is possible with only a few predetermined terminals.
