In the case of a synchronous motor having a permanent-magnet rotor (12) and a starting cage (17) connected thereto, in order to produce a starting torque, the permanent magnets are formed by magnet segments (16) in the form of circular arcs for the purpose of achieving a high synchronous moment with an adequate starting torque, which magnet segments (16) are arranged on the external circumference of the rotor body (15) and are clamped thereto by means of the starting cage (17). The starting cage (17), which acts as an air gap winding, thus at the same time takes over the retaining function for the magnet segments (16). <IMAGE>
