In a portal milling machine, vertical guideways (5-10) are provided on the two pillars (2, 3) of the portal (1), both on the front side and also on the mutually facing and opposed sides. The cross-slide (11) projects with a cross-sectionally widened portion (13) between the pillars (2, 3), thereby allowing it to be guided there by the vertical guideways (7, 8) in addition to the frontal vertical guideways (5, 6). The vertical guideways (9, 10) on the outside serve to introduce forces into the respective pillar (2, 3) particularly when the milling unit (12) is in front of it. <IMAGE>
