To obtain carbon black which has properties close to those of the black obtained by thermal decomposition of acetylene, a hot plasma jet produced by high-frequency electromagnetic induction is mixed in a reaction zone 11 with a stream of gaseous hydrocarbons under conditions such that the predominant resulting hydrocarbon is acetylene.
