A data terminal (22) includes a memory (72) and data entry means (30, 32) operable to generate transaction data identifying an operator of the terminal (22) and the type of transaction. A time of day means continuously outputs data representing the date, hour and minute. A processor (68) is arranged to reduce the amount of data that is to be stored as a result of a data entry operation. Redundant data, such as data and hour, which may not change for successive data entries is stored in a first storage area of the memory, while non-redundant data, such as the minute, is stored in a second storage area of the memory (72). For each successive data entry there is stored only the non-redundant data and any redundant data that may have changed from the preceding entry.
|
