In a freight hold, compartments separated by transverse partitions 6 open out in a central longitudinal passage 7. In the passage move, on the one hand, a conveyor belt 89 and, on the other hand, a base carriage 91. This assembly may be vertically adjusted in the passage 7. The belt conveys to the carriage crates 68 to be stored in the compartments. The vertical positioning is such that guides 92 are selectively facing corresponding guides 93 provided at various levels in the compartments. An auxiliary carriage 94 capable of lifting the crates 68 moves on the aligned guides 92, 93 in order to grasp the crates on the belt and stack them during the loading, and operates in the reverse manner during the unloading. The carriage 91 only moves so as to be directly opposite the compartments involved in the work. Use in particular in the holds of a trawler. <IMAGE>
