PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the execution of recording operation without contact of a head body with a magneto-optical recording medium, to obviate the occurrence of the wear and flawing in the medium and the head body and to simplify mechanism. SOLUTION: This magnetic head device has the magnetic head for magneto- optical recording constituted by supporting the head body 10 on the front end side of a gimbals spring 1 and a drive section 22 for lifting the head body 10. The head body 10 is not in contact with the magneto-optical disk surface D in a descending position for recording of the head body 10 regulated by the drive section 22. The head body 10 described above is formed by providing a core 11 with coils and housing the core in a nonmagnetic holder 13A. The distance between the core 1 and the disk surface D in the descending position for recording of the head body 10 is set within a range where the magnetic field necessary for recording of the magneto-optical disk is applied by the core 11.
