In a method for driving a shaft, for example an output shaft of a motor vehicle, double pistons perform a reciprocating movement in a cylinder. This movement is transmitted to the shaft, the double pistons in the cylinders each respectively forming decreasing cylinder chambers on one side and enlarging cylinder chambers on the other. Air is injected into the cylinder chamber with the greatest volume located on one side of the double piston and this air then compressed and consequently heated by the decreasing cylinder chamber. Water vapour is admitted to this heated air, which leads to an explosive pressure increase in the cylinder chamber and this increase drives the piston, the cylinder chamber situated on the other side of this enlarging cylinder chamber decreasing, once it has been filled with fresh air.
