The present invention relates to physical-training equipment. It relates in particular to a muscle-development exercise device of the type comprising a gripping member intended to be manipulated by the user and which is connected to a dual-effect return device permitting exercises in contraction and relaxation, characterised in that the said dual-effect return device consists of a pneumatic jack 1 connected via the free end of the rod 4 of the piston 3 to the gripping member 5, a first chamber 6 of the said jack 1 being connected to at least one compressed-air source 5, whilst the other 7 is connected to a highly sensitive pressure-variation detector 14 controlling, via a control circuit 15, at least one distributor 9 inserted in the compressed-air pipe 8 of the first chamber 6 of the jack 1 in order to apply a first or a second pressure to this chamber 6, as a function of the direction of displacement of the piston 3. <IMAGE>
