The device comprises a tubular body 10 inserted into the string of rods 3 onto which a tubular sleeve 15 is mounted. A support blade 6 is mounted to move in a radial direction inside the tubular sleeve 15. The sleeve 15 forms an annular pressure chamber around the body 10. The support blade 6 is subjected to the pressure inside the chamber on its internal face. The chamber can be connected with the central bore of the string of rods to cause the blade 6 to act. The sleeve 15 can be locked against rotation with the string of rods 3 by means 25, 26. The tubular sleeve 15 can also be immobilised against axial translational movement in relation to the body 10.
