The invention relates to a nuclear fuel rod assembly having a cladding tube with an end plug which is provided with gas-passage-defining means enabling the tube to be pressurized.
<??>The end plug (42) has a body portion (60) shaped and sized so as to be insertable into the cladding tube (40) in force-fitting relationship and surface-to-surface sealing contact therewith, and the gas-passage-defining means (e.g., a reduced peripheral-surface portion of the body portion, such as flat 66) extends from the inner end of the body portion to a location on its periphery which is spaced from the outer end of the body portion.
<??>Upon partial insertion of the end plug into the cladding tube, the gas-passage-defining means (66) forms a gas inlet orifice (74) through which the fuel rod can be pressurized. Full insertion of the end plug causes the gas inlet orifice to be closed and the end of the cladding tube to be sealed. |
