Igniting soot particles on diesel filter - involves use of air warmed by exhaust gas heat exchanger

The arrangement is for igniting soot particles deposited onto the exhaust filter (4) of a Diesel engine (1). The amount of combustion air reaching the engine can be restricted by a throttle valve (2). An exhaust gas heat exchanger (3) warms cold air which is then delivered by a second pipe upstream of the throttle valve, raising the exhaust gas temp. in the filter by up to 200 deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - Method of burning off soot particles from Diesel engine exhaust which can be adjusted to proceed as a continuous process.
