Planar optical waveguide has a crystal unit, consisting of a nonmagnetic substrate (S) with (1) first and (2) second epitaxial magnetooptical layers based on Fe garnet, the second having a refractive index n2 ca. 1 x 10-3 to 1 x 10-2 greater than the refractive index n1 of the first layer. The novelty is that, between (S) and (1), there is a layer (A) based on Fe garnet, which absorbs radiation in the 1.0-2.5 micron wavelength range and has a refractive index nA greater than n1. The magnetooptical layers are of the compsn. Y3-xPbxFe5O12; x = 0.007-0.015 for (S) and x = 0.02-0.04 for (2). In (S), the material contains cation substit(s). which can occupy the dodecahedral, octahedral and/or tetrahedral lattice positions in the garnet lattice. In particular, (A) has the compsn. Y3Fe5-x-y-zAxDyMzO12 where A = CoIII; D = CoII; M = SiIV, TiIV and/or ZrIV ions; x = 0-0.3; y = 0-0.3; z = y or more; y + z = 0-0.6; x + y + z = max. 0.6; x + y = more than O; z = O if y = O. Esp. suitable compsns. for (A) are Y3Fe4.9Co0.1O12; Y3Fe4.939 Co0.018Ge0.042O12; and Y3Fe4.74Co0.12Si0.15O12. (A) is max. 100 microns thick. (S) has the compsn. Gd3Ga5O12.
