An apparatus for sterilising the internal surface of a pipe for liquids or gases comprises a mobile block on which one or more, esp. three ultraviolet lamps are mounted. The block is optionally self-propelled and has an attachment for a pulling cord at its front end, so that it can be pulled through the pipe and irradiates the internal surface to sterilise it. In the preferred embodiment, three centering arms are spring-biased to keep contact with the internal surface of the pipe at rollers on the ends of the arms, thus centering the block in the pipe. In this preferred embodiment, the arms are aligned with longitudinal ribs on the block and the ultraviolet lamps are located between ribs.
