<p>An electronic key (20) and lock system (40) is usable for a variety of solenoid-operated (14) locks such as mortise locks (13) and cylindrical locks (40). An electronic key can be configured to operate only electronically or also mechanically. The key contains electronics which are externally powered and IR devices (32, 33) which communicate with IR devices in a lock cylinder to actuate the locking mechanism. A plastic housing (25) for the key electronics and IR devices is produced in one piece to be moisture proof by a molding process. A positive contact (30) for electrical communication to a power source is provided along the key blade either flush with the blade surface or raised therefrom. A cylinder (40) inserted, for example, in a door with a mortise lock, can be made of plastic and have leaf spring contact arms (44) and a low-battery warning light (LB) joined to lead wires of a pin connector (56) with a press fit.</p> |
