A device for illuminating a surface is provided with a light source and a flat illumination panel made from light-permeable material. The light source is arranged on one side of the cladding panel and, from this side, emits light into the illumination panel. Grooves which intersect the light emitted by the light source are arranged in the panel. The depth of successive grooves increases as the distance from the groove in question to the light source increases.
