With one-line dot data transferred from a development buffer to a print buffer, a check is made to see if the tallest character in the current line contains at least 100 dots when a local underline (LU) or a local frame (LF) flag is set for that line. The result of the check is used to vary the line width of the underlining or framing accordingly. With the LU or LF subroutine is terminated for all lines in the text, a check is made to see if a global underline (GU) or a global frame (GF) flag is set. If either of the two kinds of global processing is set, a check is made to see if the printable range of the tape comprises 100 dots or more.
