In a method for treating a cyano-containing waste liquid, a thermal decomposition (3) is usually carried out. The resultant organic formate-compound causes an increase in COD and BOD and is difficult to decompose due to the presence of ammonia and salt which are also formed as a result of the thermal decomposition. In the present invention, the thermally decomposed waste (9) liquid is treated (10) with an aerobic bacterium, to which a facutative anaerobe is degenerated and adapted (13).
