In the joining of flat workpieces (9,10) with large contact areas by soldering or diffusion welding; the workpieces are accommodated in a closed, evacuatable chamber whose wall element (6) facing the workpiece (10) is made movable by means of an adjoining flexible element (7), a flexible seal or a sliding joint provided with a seal. The distance between the top of the workpiece (10) and the wall element (6) is chosen so that when the chamber is evacuated, the wall element comes to bear firmly on the workpiece as a result of the atmospheric pressure.
