PURPOSE: To control grain size distribution and to improve packing density by bringing nickel salt aq. soln. aqueous ammonia and alkali hydroxide aq. soln. into reaction in specified condition. CONSTITUTION: The nickel salt aq. soln., 0.2-4.0mol aqueous ammonia and 1.6-2.6mol alkali hydroxide aq. soln each per 1mol of the nickel salt are fed continuously into a reaction vessel. The medium liq. is removed till a sufficient stirring is attained before this reaction system overflows the reaction vessel, and the reaction system is allowed to react at 20-80 deg.C while repeating a volume increase of the reaction system due to a fed liq. for reaction and a volume decrease due to a removal of the medium liq. to form nickel hydroxide particles. Then, after adding prescribed amount of each reaction liq., the supply of all reaction liq. is stopped, and the nickel hydroxide particles having 3-50μm average grain size and 1.9-2.2g/ml tap density are separated.
