PURPOSE: To obtain such a liquid crystal display element that causes no decrease in contrast even when a spacer is fixed with an adhesive and causes no decrease in durability of the cell by fixing a spacer with an adhesive containing inorg. particles. CONSTITUTION: A spacer 7 which holds substrates 2 at a specified distance is fixed to the inside of an oriented film 4 with an adhesive 8. The spacer 7 has only to be fixed to at least one oriented film. In this example, the spacer is adhered and fixed to the lower oriented film 4. The liquid crystal cell is assembled by applying an acryl adhesive 8 in which titanium oxide particles (inorg. particles) are preliminarily dispersed on a spacer comprising 6-μm diameter particles of a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer, and then adhering the spacer to the oriented film 4. When light irradiates the spacer 7, light beams in the spacer part are diffused, which makes voids around the spacer 7 invisible. Thus, the display characteristics can be improved without decreasing the contrast of the liquid crystal cell.
