Electroluminescent materials comprising poly(phenylene-vinylene) derivs.

The use of poly(phenylene-vinylene) derivs. with repeat units of formula (I) as electroluminescent materials is claimed: -A<1>-(A<2>)C=CH-A<3>-CH=C(A<2>)- (I) A<1>-A<3> = opt. substd., mono- or multi- nuclear aryl and/or heteroaryl gps. opt. bridge-coupled and/or condensed with A<1> and A<3> being divalent and A<2> monovalent. Also claimed are: (a) an electroluminescence material contg. one or more polymers of formula (I); (b) a polymer of formula (I) with A<1>-A<3> being heterocyclic residues; (c) a process for producing an electroluminescence material comprising (i) condensing a phosphoorganic cpd. of formula (III) with a diketone of formula (II) with the use of a basic condensation agent to form a polymer of formula (I) Z2-PO-CH2-A<3>-CH2-PO-Z2 (III) A<2>-CO-A<1>-CO-A<2> (II); Z = alkoxy (e.g. EtO) or aryl (e.g. Ph); and (ii) coating the obtd. polymer in the form of a film on a substrate; and (d) an electroluminescent device having one or more active layers, novel in that at least one of these active layers contains a polymer of formula (I).
