PURPOSE: To detect rupture of a sample at the time of a tension/compression repeating test by finding an effective value of tension/compression load applied to the sample and judging the rupture of the sample from the effective value. CONSTITUTION: A load cell detects load applied to a sample and an effective value circuit 5 converts a detected load value into an effective value. An operator sets a rupture value by a volume control 6 and a meter 7 indicates a rupture set value. A comparator 8 compares the effective value of the detected value with the rupture set value, and a relay 9 outputs to the outside at the time of rupture detection. However, the effective value of the load value (RMS) is found from an expression RMS=√mean (input load)<2> . When tension/ compression such as metal material is performed by such a material test machine, the rupture of the sample can be detected without malfunctioning even at a switch point of tension/compression (a point at which load is zero). Furthermore, safety stop of the machine in the case where the sample is ruptured and ensuring of a rupture sectional area of the sample can be performed.
