The method uses the measurement signals received by a metal detector along a measurement path. The detector has not less than two metal sensors (1,2) arranged at different heights (H1,H2) and separated by a distance (X) for the direct determination of the depth of the object from the measurement signals received. Reception of the signals and determining the depth can take place simultaneously and calculation, control of sensors, evaluation of signals and determination of depth can be performed by a programmable controller IC. The measurement signals can be digitised, and by dividing the filtered signal from one sensor by that from the second, a ratio is obtained which defines the depth of the object.
