Novel difluoroquinolines which can be used in liq. crystal mixts. are of formula (I). Also claimed specifically are (I) with o = p = q = r = 0. R<1> and R<2> = H, F, Cl, CN, CS, CF3, OCF3, OCHF2, 1-16C alkyl (the alkyl gp. being with or without an asymmetric C; opt. having one or two non-adjacent CH2 gps. replaced by -O-, -S-, -CO-, -CO.O-, -O.CO-, -CO.S-, -S.CO-, -O.CO.O-, -CH=CH-, -C?=C-, 1,2-cyclopropane or -Si(Me)2-; and opt. having one or more alkyl H replaced by F, Cl, Br or Cn) or a chiral gp. of formula (II-X), R<3>-C*HCl-CO-O- (XI), R<3>-C*HF-CO-O- (XII), R<3>-C*HCl-CH2-O- (XIII), R<3>-C*HF-CH2-O- (XIV), R<3>-C*HCl-CH2COO-O- (XV), R<3>-C*HF-CH2COO-O- (XVI), R<3>-O-C*H(Me)-CO-O- (XVII), R<3>-O-C*H(Me)-O-CO- (XVIII), R<3>-C*H(CN)-CO-O- (XIX) and R<3>-C*H(CN)-O-CO- (XX). A<1>-A<4> = 1,4-phenylene, pyrazin-2,5-diyl, pyradizin-3,6-diyl, pyridin-2,5-diyl, pyrimidin-2,5-diyl (one or two H opt. replaced by F), trans-1,4-cyclohexylene (one or two H opt. replaced by CN), (1,3,4)-thiadiazol-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dioxan-2,5-diyl, naphthalene-2,6-diyl, bicyclo (2.2.2)octan-1,4-diyl or 1,3-dioxa-borinan-2,5-diyl; M<1>-M<4> = -O-, -S-, -CO-, -CO.O-, -O.CO-, -CO.S-, -S.CO-, -O.CO.O-, -CH2O-, -CH2.CH2-, -CH=CH- or -C?=C-; R<3>, R<4>, R<6> and R<7> = H or 1-16C alkyl, with R<3> and R<4> opt. together forming -(CH2)-4or5 when substd. an dioxolan system; M<5> = -CH2.O-, -CO.O-, -O.CH2-, -O.CO- or a single bond; and k-r = 0 or 1, with k+m+p+r = above 0 but less than 4.
