In a chair chassis with a reclinable backrest (30) pivotally connected (48) with the rear of the seat frame (32), the backrest has a lower extension link connected at a low level with the side pieces (40) of the chair so as to condition a lowering of the entire backrest, when it is reclined. The front of the seat (32) is pivotally connected (44) with the fixed chassis (34, 40), so the seat will swing down without being substantially raised at the front. The movements are ergonomically advantageous, and moreover the pivot connection (48) between the seat and the backrest is arranged so as to counteract mutual sliding between the respective cushion surfaces. A complete lack of connection between the side pieces (36) and the upper part of the backrest provides for novel possibilities of design of the armrests.
