PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymn. catalyst which is useful for polymerizing anα-olefin, is esp. suitable for producing an isotactic PP, and can be simply synthesized by combining a specific transition metal compd. with an organoaluminum compd. SOLUTION: This catalyst is a combination of a transition metal compd. represented by the formula: Ln MXm [wherein M is a transition metal of the groups IIIA, IVA, and VA; L is a four-electron-donating cyclic unsatd. hydrocarbon ligand (L1 ) or a ligand (L2 ) formed by substituting at least one H atom of ligand L1 with at least one group selected from among a halogen, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, and an alkoxy group, the ligand being coordinated with M by aπ-bond; X is a halogen or a ligand coordinated with M by aσ-bond; n is 1 or 2; and m is 0-4] (e.g. biscyclooctatetraenylzirconium) with an organoaluminum compd. (e. g. methylalumoxane) pref. in a molar ratio of (1:0.01)-(1:20,0000), still pref. (1:1,000)-(1:10,000).
