PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of fouling or the formation of a bulky polymer, by employing, in a catalyst comprising a metallocene compound, an auxiliary catalyst for olefin polymerization and an organoaluminum compound, a specific value for the atomic ratio of M in the auxiliary catalyst to a transition metal atom in the metallocene compound. SOLUTION: An auxiliary catalyst (A) which is obtained by contacting 0.0001 to 1,000,000 pts.wt. of an ionic compound having the formula, wherein M represents boron or aluminum; R<1-3> is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, an alkoxy group, a phenoxy group or a halogen; R<4> is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group which may contain a heteroatom; L is a silyl, hydroxyl, carboxyl or amino group; a-c is 0 to 3; d is 1 to 4; and a+b+c+d=4, with 100 pts.wt. of a particulate carrier having a mean particle diameter of 0.01 to 2,000μm and a specific surface area of 1 to 2000 g/m<2> , a metallocene compound (B) and an organoaluminum compound (c) are used in amounts such that the atomic ratio of M in component A to a transition metal atom in component B is less than 2.5.
