A mass spectrometer apparatus is adapted to separate desired from unwanted ions. It has the elements of the apparatus divided into first and second groups of elements, each of which groups include at least one element, wherein the first group of elements is located on a first upstream axis and the second group of elements is located on a second downstream axis, which first and second axes are inclined at an angle to one another, the angle being such that at least a portion of the desired ions travel from the first axis to the second axis, and that the unwanted ions substantially fail to traverse from the first axis to the second axis. The first group can include the ion source, the inlet plate and elements for directing the ions into the spectrometer. The second group of elements can includes a vacuum chamber, a first rod set and an interface plate at the outlet of the vacuum chamber, so that the angle between the two axis portions is provided at the inlet to the rod set.
