SPONGY POROUS SPHERICAL PARTICLES AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

Spongy porous spherical particles which are excellent in strength and handleability and have a polyvinyl acetal skeleton. The particles are characterized by (1) having spaces through which a microorganism, etc., is freely movable, (2) having inner walls to which a microorganism can adhere, (3) having flowability, (4) having excellent mechanical strength (wearing resistance), (5) having elasticity, and hence having a prolonged life when used as a carrier. The particles are further characterized in that (6) since they are restorable even after drying, they can be compressed in a dry state to attain a reduction in transportation cost, and that (7) since merely adding the particles as they are to drainage results in spontaneous adhesion of a microorganism thereto, microorganism immobilization is easy.
